"A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who
sticks closer than a brother" (Proverbs 18:24).
Here's some of what the Bible says about:
Friends
Injustice
Love
Marriage
Parents and children
Friends
"He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers
harm" (Proverbs 13:20).
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility
consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only
to your own interests, but also to the interests of others" (Philippians
2:3,4).
Injustice
"But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give
an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that
you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear
conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good
behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. It is better, if it
is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil. For Christ
died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring
you to God" (1 Peter 3:15-18).
"And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in
Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you
and make you strong, firm and steadfast. To him be the power for ever
and ever. Amen" (1 Peter 5:10,11).
Love
"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my
love. If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I
have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. I have told you
this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My
command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has
no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my
friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because
a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called
you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made
known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you
to go and bear fruit --fruit that will last. Then the Father will give
you whatever you ask in my name" (John 15:9-16).
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that
whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life" (John
3:16).
"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son
into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we
loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice
for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love
one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God
lives in us and his love is made complete in us. We know that we live in
him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have
seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of
the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God
lives in him and he in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has
for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him.
In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have
confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like
him. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because
fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in
love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, 'I love God,'
yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his
brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he
has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother"
(1 John 4:9-21).
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it
is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily
angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but
rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always
hopes, always perseveres ... And now these three remain: faith, hope and
love. But the greatest of these is love" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and 13).
Marriage
"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to
your husbands as to the Lord ... Husbands, love your wives, just as
Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy,
cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present
her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any
other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought
to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves
himself" (Ephesians 5:21, 22 and 25-28).
"Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any
of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by
the behaviour of their wives, when they see the purity and reverence of
your lives. Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as
braided hair and the wearing of gold jewellery and fine clothes.
Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a
gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight. For
this is the way the holy women of the past who put their hope in God
used to make themselves beautiful. They were submissive to their own
husbands, like Sarah, who obeyed Abraham and called him her master. You
are her daughters if you do what is right and do not give way to fear.
Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives,
and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you
of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers"
(1 Peter 3:1-7).
"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to
his wife, and the two will become one flesh ... I tell you that anyone
who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries
another woman commits adultery" (Matthew 19:5 and 9).
"He answered, "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman
commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and
marries another man, she commits adultery" (Mark 10:11,12).
Parents and Children
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honour
your father and mother' - which is the first commandment with a promise
- 'that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the
earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up
in the training and instruction of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:1-4).
