Colorado Springs, Colorado— International Bible Society (IBS) is distributing thousands of Scriptures to people in Southern Florida impacted by Hurricane Charley.
The ministry began distribution on August 17, along with The Salvation Army, U.S. Military Chaplains, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and other local churches. Through the cooperative effort, IBS seeks to bring a message of hope and comfort to the victims of this hurricane by distributing up to 40,000 Scripture resources.
Hurricane Charley made landfall on August 13, crossing the Florida peninsula and leaving in its wake 25 confirmed dead and an estimated $20 billion in damages. Approximately two million people were evacuated, and more than 760, 000 people were left without power.
According to estimates from the federal government, Hurricane Charley ranks as the third-worst disaster to hit North America.
“Drawing on its Crisis and Disaster Outreach Fund, IBS is providing a variety of Scriptures to help meet the spiritual needs of those impacted by Hurricane Charley,” said Peter Bradley, President of IBS. “We know only God’s Word can comfort those who have been through this crisis, so we are giving out these Scriptures as quickly as possible.”
The Scripture materials being provided were developed to minister to disaster victims the comfort and hope found in God’s Word. Some of the Scriptures in this distribution are When Your Whole World Changes (in English and Spanish for adults), Deeper Still (in English and Spanish for adults), A Time for Everything (for children), Building the Mosaic (a Scripture-based journal for disaster and relief workers), a large-print volume of Psalms, and King James Version New Testaments.
Jeffrey Jellets, The Salvation Army’s Territorial Disaster Coordinator in Atlanta, said, “IBS’ support is helping us achieve our goal of ministering to both the physical and spiritual needs of those affected by Hurricane Charley. The Salvation Army appreciates our partnership with IBS. We are working together to bring God’s Word into the hands and hearts of the men, women and children in this area.”
Individuals in the United States wishing to donate to IBS’ ongoing Crisis and Disaster Outreach Fund may do so by calling Donor Services, toll-free1-800-987-3595, or by visiting www.IBSMinistry.org/disasterfund. Also, for those wishing to have Scriptures in this disaster area, please contact IBS at 1-800-266-6364 and they will be provided to you.
