New IBS Scripture Resource Encourages Relief Workers09.09.2003 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado--International Bible Society (IBS) and World Relief will present Building the Mosaic: Encouragement for the Relief Worker, a new Scripture resource, to relief ministries at a ceremony in New York City on September 10. Building the Mosaic was developed to provide a way for relief workers to process their thoughts and emotions, and to strengthen and comfort them with Scripture as they respond to the needs of disaster survivors.
Ministries working in disaster response recognize that many of their employees and volunteers don't take time to care for their own physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
"Breakdown, fatigue and frustration are normal feelings, for even the most seasoned relief workers," said Dr. Gustavo Crocker, Senior Vice President of Programs for World Relief. "Unfortunately, as they spend hours, days and months serving people impacted by disaster, relief workers often experience feelings of loneliness, inadequacy, impotence and fatigue. Eventually, many of them just give up, feeling that they have failed," Crocker continued.
Building the Mosaic helps workers cope with these feelings. The 256-page book contains the complete book of Psalms, 20 Scripture passages relevant to disaster and crisis situations, and journal space following each passage for workers to write about their personal thoughts, feelings, questions or challenges.
Additional features appeal to disaster responders as well. The mosaic theme throughout the book shows how even broken pieces can produce beautiful results. IBS' New International Reader's Version (NIrV) text allows workers easy access to biblical encouragement.
Tom Youngblood, IBS Vice President for Outreach, said, "Building the Mosaic speaks to the caregivers who go to some of the most difficult places, work some of the longest days, and deal with some of the most challenging circumstances." Youngblood continued, "My prayer is that this Scripture piece will help crisis and disaster workers around the world persevere during trying times."
World Relief funded the research and development of Building the Mosaic, as well as the first print run of 15,000 copies in English and 10,000 copies in Spanish. In the future, the book may be translated into other languages for relief workers serving in crises outside the United States.
International Bible Society, founded in 1809, faithfully translates, publishes and reaches out with God's Word so that people around the world may become disciples of Jesus Christ and members of His Body.Related links:
