Press Release Detail

93,000 Homes in Mississippi Will Receive Gospel of Luke on Palm Sunday

02.04.2004

JACKSON, Mississippi--International Bible Society (IBS) and more than 30 local Christian leaders and churches in central Mississippi are teaming up to provide thousands of individuals and families in Jackson and the surrounding area a special Gospel of Luke, The Servant King, as an insert in their Sunday newspaper, The Clarion Ledger. On April 4th, 93,000 Gospels of Luke will arrive at Jackson homes in what may be the most significant Christian outreach in the area in decades.

IBS developed The Servant King New Testament and The Servant King Gospel of Luke, which incorporate imagery from Mel Gibson's popular movie, The Passion of the Christ, for Christians to use as follow-up to the movie. "Many people are leaving the movie with a desire to know more of the story," said Joe Pridgen, Pastor of Sweet Rest Church in Pearl, Mississippi. He continued, "This is a simple way to get the story out to them. In fact, many who have read the story of Jesus' life, service and sacrifice have a desire to read the story again after seeing the movie."

According to IBS President Peter Bradley, the Scripture pieces are specifically intended to help churches reach individuals who have seen the film but have never actually read the story.

"This movie has the potential to become a fantastic tool for evangelism," Bradley said. "It is the hope of everyone at International Bible Society that after viewing The Passion of the Christ, many people will seek to learn more about Jesus through the pages of His Word, the Bible."

Generally, Easter Sunday draws the year's greatest number of visitors to churches, and IBS believes the Gospel of Luke will result in record attendance in the Jackson area this Easter, April 11. Partners in the Scripture outreach have included a printed invitation to attend one of the local churches that day.

The Servant King editions represent the latest in a long line of specialty Scripture materials produced by IBS for use by churches and ministry organizations.

Founded in 1809, International Bible Society faithfully translates, publishes and reaches out with God's Word so that people around the world may become disciples of Jesus Christ and members of His Body.
